It's never too late. Just think of your territory payment/s as tuition and then you can give yourself an honorary credential of some kind -- who better to bestow it than the founder/maintainer himself! It will be almost as expensive, half the effort, and more worth it than any real degree (probably).

Not pursuing math professionally is a minor regret of mine.  I say minor because I don't know if I actually would have succeeded at it.
