If you can set up a small solar system or even just a battery which you charge off the mains when there is power it could make life more comfortable. We live 100% offgrid with a 5 kw/h battery based solar system that cost about $2500usd all up (including a very efficient fridge freezer) - no more power bills...ever! Do use a woodstove for cooking and heating in winter, but gas which we use in summer is an alternative.
