I have been looking into Lightning Beneath the Sea: The Race to Wire the World and the Dawn of the Information Age by James M. Tabor.

It tells the incredible story of Cyrus Field and the brutal 19th-century campaign to lay the first transatlantic telegraph cable.

Long before fiber optics or modern protocols, these engineers faced immense financial ruin and catastrophic hardware failures just trying to physically drop thousands of miles of wire onto an uncharted ocean floor.

It’s a great look at the raw grit that built the world's very first global communication network. Definitely worth checking out if you like engineering history and the origins of the information age.
