pull down to refresh

Most people fake it until they make it, but sometimes the "making it" part takes way too long. I was today years old when I figured out a much faster way to handle a daily chore I have been doing wrong for a decade.

It's wild how we can go years operating on bad habits just because we never thought to look for a better way. Hopefully, a few shared stories here will make me feel a bit better about my own delayed development.

Tact. Oh wait...

I've seen you give a masterclass in tact today.

Yet, it doesn't matter <3

I was very meticulous early in life, then, I rebelled against that and have been very sloppy ever since. Only very recently, I've become meticulous again. And boy does it pay off--that little extra effort to at least try to reach for perfection.

reply

what does meticulous mean in your context? i have to imagine that physicists need to be pretty meticulous so you must be referring to personal life stuff

reply

No, also in physics. Or at least at the level of all the tangential stuff. Like how much effort I'd put into making a good research proposal, the mathematical rigor in the drafts of my publications that I'd submit for review to my PI... I've somehow managed to get this far by doing just enough (if I understand it, why would I bother presenting it cleanly to others?), but I now realize that doing just a little bit more can be very much appreciated by others and thus, eventually, beneficial to me too. Of course, the availability of LLMs makes this part easier.

reply

Ah, I tend to be meticulous in work (math envy) but not meticulous in social life (hate party planning, going the extra mile, dressing up).

I've realized that this is not a good combo that leads to success haha

reply

Ok, dressing up, that's still something I'm somehow resisting, but it would make my wife very happy if I could just shave, put on deodorant, and just not look like a hobo when I head to the lab in the morning. That's next on my list of things to improve.

Hmmm...touching experience, thanks for sharing.
