While practically speaking, it's true that deprivation can boost subsequent pleasure, if we accept this frame, does that not make wire-heading - a technology enabled, ultimate and eternal pleasure state - as the goal for humans? Again within this philosophical framing: fasting and other forms of discipline simply become primitive attempts at maximizing the sum of pleasures experienced over a long time period.
Only by going outside the hedonic framework, that's where I think you start to see other interesting things that discipline and sacrifice give you: Budhist 'elimination of desire' and Spinozan 'capacity to act' and certainly many others. George Hotz had some interesting ideas about this in a recent write up as well 1.
