Bitcoin Mining Clothes Dryer

Here at the homestead we host guests at a tiny house as well as a 20ft yurt so one of the largest power usages is the electric clothes dryer. In the busy season, the dryer is usually running all day long. It made a lot of sense to use a Bitcoin miner for the heat instead of the heating element in the dryer. I am using the same permaculture concept as I apply it to plants and animals at the homestead, give them and job; get paid in food. I give the miners a job and get paid in no kyc Bitcoin in a dca fashion!

I tried to use what I already had as much as possible to connect the miner to the dryer, so for less than $100 I was able to make it work. Basically needed a 20a 220v breaker and 220v outlet plus some ductwork. I simply cut a hole in the heating duct in the back of the dryer and attached a 6in duct coupling to it. If I need to I can cap off the coupling and continue to use the dryer as normal. Basically if the Bitcoin miner breaks down I won't be stranded without a dryer.

To operate, I set the dryer to timed dry, set the heat to air dry, and turn on the miner. After using it for a dozen loads or so it definitely works well. Next I will be working on how to reduce the noise from the miner fans but to start I wanted to make sure it was capable of drying laundry first. Feels good to get sats back for one one of the largest power usages on the homestead!
After a year of the first iteration, I did a massive upgrade to the system and basically mitigated all the downsides of the first implementation.

Now that I can attenuate the power consumption/hashrate with 3rd party firmware, I can essentially run the dryer on different presets based on what I'm drying. Also, with lower fan speeds, the positive pressure in the drum is reduced which means less lint and heat escaping into the room.

I love these kinds of "functional" bitcoin mining. Unfortunately, I live in the deep South. We don't need any extra heat.

You can have that heat any day you want.

Oops. I meant for Magnolia's comment about having enough heat... Not yours

I thought you were joking, so was I...

I think almost everyone uses a clothes dryer and hot water heater. Plus, I've been working on an air conditioner, it's still in a proof of concept stage. I was hoping someone would take the idea and run with it but no one has yet.

i have a clothes dryer, but never use it.

Prefer to air/sun dry it.

One trivia I learnt, in North America you tend to have an exhaust for the dryer. So the damp air can leave... Speeding up the drying time immensely.

I've lived in Australia, Asia and Europe and they don't have that system.

Reducing noise, I've always been tempted to find some non bearing type fans.

They 'exist' but not that common.

Shaula congrats u for u work !!!

For less than $100 + a 6in coupling and you get a dryer that pays you in non-KYC sats - this is peak permaculture.

‎161°F on the gun - that's real heat. Love that you made it reversible too so you're not stranded if miner dies. Real engineering is keeping fallback.
‎
‎In Aba we don't have this kind of dryer, we sun-dry, but we run small gen for everything. This makes me think about using miner heat for food drying or garri processing - same idea, give miner a job, get food + sats.

‎Brilliant build @revhodl21

I've got a Bitcoin mining dehydrator that runs on solar. sounds like I should make a post about that.

the reversible duct is the part I like. miner dies, cap the coupling, dryer still works. most homestead hacks leave you stranded when the clever bit fails.

you can dial hashrate down now too. curious how long a normal load takes on a low preset versus the old heating element. still faster, or are you babysitting towels for an hour?
