Fiat money is just money printing. What thing about stealing through inflation is something that can be "managed responsibly"?
Inflation is theft. No amount of appeal to authority should sugarcoat this.
Its not that simple.
If fiat money is directed toward productive investment that raises the wealth and prosperity of the entire nation it can be a useful mechanism.
If however fiat money-capital issuance is directed toward non productive asset price pumping it is not.
In the neoliberal deregulation of banking previous constraints upon the issuance of fiat debt-capital toward non productive purposes were removed- this is part of the reason why the western world has ever since experienced escalating house prices and declining productivity.
As an academic I guess he is looking for understanding of the system and how it could be fixed.
While Bitcoin is a valid protest against the widespread misuse of fiat monetary powers it is also worth considering that if managed responsibly fiat monetary powers are not inherently evil.
