targeted software provided by Danish engineering firm Danfoss.
Normally, supermarket freezers go through a short period of defrosting overnight, in which temperatures rise slightly. But the hackers ordered the units to heat up and stay hot, although Danfoss did not confirm any reports about just how warm the fridges and freezers could become in that process.
Monday morning were hit by a wave of hot air from the freezers. In some places there were even small fires

We might want to rethink connecting everything to the internet. Especially a fridge or freezer. It's not like there's much maintenance. You turn it on and it stays on and works fine for years even decades.

I totally agree, I grew up watching sci-fi movies with “smart” homes turning against their neighbors inhabitants so when smart devices started popping everywhere, I told my wife “no way, we don’t need it”

So much for the security of cold storage.

All that’s missing is someone hacking my toaster so I can’t have breakfast. 🤖🧊🔥

Classic retail-chain pattern: the fridges and price labels are just the visible symptom. These intrusions usually start months earlier through vendor remote-maintenance VPNs shared across thousands of stores, then move laterally across flat networks where the fridge controller and the payment terminal sit on the same VLAN.

What incident reports keep showing: retail IoT fleets run firmware 3-5 years behind, with shared credentials that never rotate. 'Smart' here means 'a Linux box nobody patches, with a cloud dependency you don't control'.

Same trust-minimization argument bitcoiners know well: every device that needs someone else's server to function is an availability risk you've outsourced. The French retail sector is learning that the expensive way this week.

Speak now and forever hold your keys... because even French fridges are getting hacked now. If your cheese can get ransomwared, your hot wallet doesn't stand a chance. Cold storage isn't cold enough anymore!
