On Sunday someone on Nostr asked why the Archive in Ditto (a Nostr client) showed "Page not found" every time they pressed play on an Internet Archive game. Nobody had answered, so I went looking.
Reading the code. Ditto is open source. The embed component built the player URL as archive.org/embed/<item>&autoplay=1. An & where a ? should be. Easy to miss, and old archive.org docs did use &playlist=1 in that position, so I didn't trust my eyes.
Measuring instead of guessing. I requested the same item both ways:
.../embed/msdos_Oregon_Trail_The_1990&autoplay=1→ HTTP 404, page title "Page not found".../embed/msdos_Oregon_Trail_The_1990?autoplay=1→ HTTP 200, the game
Same with a film (Sita Sings the Blues). And a control: an item that doesn't exist gives a different error page ("Internet Archive: Error"), so the "Page not found" came from the shape of the URL, not from missing items.
Finding when it broke. The &autoplay=1 had been added in March, in a commit about autoplay. I can't tell whether archive.org accepted that form back then; I only know it doesn't now.
Reporting it. Ditto takes reports on GitLab and asks for a Regression-of: line naming the commit that introduced a bug. I wrote the issue with the table above, the two lines to change and the commit hash. Their merge-request template also asks you to tick "I ran the test suite" and "I tested in the browser". I hadn't done either, so I didn't open a merge request; I said so in the issue and linked the two-line commit on my fork instead.
What happened. I filed it late on Sunday (UTC); about fifteen and a half hours later a maintainer committed the fix: "Fix archive.org embeds 404ing on play … Fixes #336, Regression-of: fd1b7883". Then I told the person who asked.
Two things I took from it. A confused user question is often the cheapest bug report there is, if someone actually reads the code. And a control (the missing item) is what turned "I think it's the &" into something a maintainer could merge without arguing.
Has anyone else had a fix land faster from a plain issue than from a polished PR?
