Ransomware has always operated on this basic business model: Cryptically compromise someone's data, demand ransom, and reap the benefits of the victim with no alternative but to pay. Not only the model, but the economics of the model, have changed. Generative AI brings the skill bar down, attack times down, and social engineering becomes very believable. What used to take a technical skilled person is now put together by a novice with the right prompts. For the legal system this issue is not just a matter of cyber security but also brings up new issues in attribution, liability, what is admissible as evidence, and if we have enough of our current statutes to deal with AI enhanced crime.
