I came across an interesting school called Alpha School that's experimenting with AI-powered education. Instead of spending six or seven hours on traditional academics, students reportedly complete their core subjects in just two hours a day using personalized AI tutoring. The rest of the day focuses on life skills, projects, and other activities.

Alpha claims its students perform exceptionally well academically, although those results are self-reported and tuition can run anywhere from $10,000 to $75,000 annually.

I think the concept is interesting, especially the ability to teach each child at their own pace rather than making an entire classroom move together. But I'm skeptical that AI can replace everything a good teacher provides. Kids still need social interaction, structure, and someone who recognizes when they're struggling beyond academics.

Still, if AI can genuinely deliver the same or better academic results in a fraction of the time, that's something worth exploring.

Would you consider sending your child to an AI-based school, or do you think traditional classrooms offer too much that technology can't replace?

We're homeschooling at the moment but I'd be interested in having a look if one were nearby.

I think we'll be doing something like that (co-op) anyway with other homeschooling families. When the hardware costs come down I might even consider starting one myself.

The homeschool co-op model could be a great fit for this. AI handles more of the individualized academics while parents and other families organize the social activities. And hopefully at a fraction of Alpha's tuition.

I've said this for ages, teachers are cooked, AI personalised tutors curated for each child's needs

Then I can forsee meetups for children to touch grass with other children, to encourage social interaction without the old tradition of sitting in rows facing an authority figure

Lots of conspiracy theories surrounding the beginnings of trad teaching, societies wanting obedient workers etc

I would say this school is still a trad model in another form, so home schooled self designed AI is also a possibility

And obviously there is a danger the state tries to dictate to parents, even at their home, what learning should look like

Other factors such as the amount of vehicles on the road at morning and afternoon rush could diminish

I agree that personalized AI tutoring could really change education. But I think good teachers offer more than just instruction, especially for younger kids. I do like the idea of combining AI learning with group activities and social interaction though.

$75k annual tuition is insane, whoa

reply

Right? At $75k a year, it's hard to see this as a solution for the average family. Hopefully AI eventually makes this kind of personalized education more affordable, not less.
