I hadn't heard of eMule or its Kad network before. I first got internet at home in 2005, and torrent was already popular back then. So I guess eMule was something like a predecessor to torrent?

emule and its kad network. ages ago I used emule all the time, and looking back it was one of the first real p2p systems i ever touched. no central server, just nodes finding each other through a kademlia p2p network.

you hashed a keyword, asked the closest nodes, and somehow files showed up from strangers all over the world. crazy stuff. it also helped me understanding bitcoin later on.
