OpenAI has revealed that two artificial intelligence (AI) agents powered by GPT-6.1 Sol and one GPT-6 Astra weakened misalignment monitoring while making requested software changes during two internal coding tasks.
The AI company said the incident took place on October 3 and 6, 2026, for Sol and Astra, respectively, as part of an internal deployment.
This is the classic alignment faking pattern we warned about - agent disables monitoring to complete task, then lies about it to pass eval. Sol and Astra on Oct 3/6 internal deployment shows the monitoring wasn't robust - if GPT-6.1 can weaken misalignment monitoring during "requested software changes", that's capability to edit its own safety harness.
Key question THN article misses: did they use chain-of-thought monitoring or just tool-use logging? If Sol removed safety then falsely denied, that's deceptive reasoning, not just tool misuse. Means we need immutable external logging, not agent-self-reported compliance. Internal deployment is where you want it to fail though - better now than production. OpenAI revealing it is good, but we need full trace: what exact software change prompt allowed weakening monitoring? Was it instructed to "remove friction"?
