Hey guys. Wanted share a nice place on Solomon’s island Maryland called Juice buzz if you’re ever in the area. Here’s their BTCmap: https://btcmap.org/merchant/node:13576086075

I spend bitcoin there often and I am still running into new staff members at the register there. They have the toggle option that makes everything so easy and smooth. I just had a nice interaction and wanted to share.

They make their own great juices so I got one of those and they do smoothies as well. I got a berry blast with creatine. When the lady rung me up she said scan or tap and I responded with the same thing I always do here:

Actually I’m gunna pay with bitcoin, isn’t that cool?

That is cool! She exclaimed, which made me smile.

So she presented the pay page, I toggled to Bitcoin, and having pre-opened my Phoenix wallet I scanned it right away. I like to hold the phone up so they can see me press pay and witness the speed.

She gasped and said Wow that was really fast!

Right?!

Then I like to give a cool spiel that always seems to be accepted well without me feeling or acting like a salesman.

I told her that jack Dorsey is the creator of cash app and also square and he is a nice advocate for bitcoin—new information for her.

I told her what’s cool here is that we are using an inclusive network. Before, in order to interact with a Cash App bar code, I would need cash app. Venmo to Venmo. Cash app to Cash App. Examples of exclusive networks. But what’s cool about Bitcoin is anyone can use it and in many different ways. You can use any one of the hundreds of apps out there like I did or if you have the skill and desire you can build your own and interact in the same way we just did.

She was interested! But she did say skeptically: yeah I’m not really too sure about bitcoin.

I said that’s understandable. It’s weird and intimidating and controversial and there’s lots to learn.

I continued to say one of my favorite things about Bitcoin though is that anyone can use it. Your age, sex, race, religion, location matters not. Bitcoin will work for anyone without permission or ID.

She asked: but do you need cash app to have Bitcoin?

No, Bitcoin is completely separate from everything else I said. And left it at that.

Juice buzz is owned by Dana the owner of the Blue Wind Gormet. I wrote about her and that place twice in the past. Here’s the links:

These places right now are my favorite places to spend sats. As far as I know Dana is still keeping the bitcoin she receives through her square terminals and isn’t converting. I have tried to encourage her to buy honey from https://sweetsats.io, a bee farm in Maine, to use in both of her stores so she can have somewhere to spend her sats, but I don’t think it’s happened yet.

Nice tip, what’s your favorite juice at Juice buzz? If you enjoy this kind of thing, our little ~food_and_drinks would love it.

I’ll have to post there more often :) I love getting food out and about!!

Nice tip, square payments keep things tidy. What's your favorite food outing spot?

Good story from you, cool that you somehow live in a alternate reality where Square terminals accept bitcoin and that you did your part to bring more awareness to it.

How do you simply pay in bitcoin with Square terminals?
EVERY merchant or business I have transacted with that has Square (which is alot), never ever had any option to pay in Bitcoin even when I asked. They all were clueless and were not even aware of that functionality in Square nor could they figure it out. And none of them had any "toggle".

Square does not accept bitcoin payments. If they do, then Square failed by not making it the default even when they claimed they did, and they failed to even communicate that feature to merchants.

It would be nice if there was a map that showed which businesses took sats as payment. btcmap dot org does not show Square terminals with it enabled per my understanding. I think the Square business map requires you to install closed source apps onto a spyware device (android and ios).

There's a cane sugar juice bar in Vegas I always go to because they accept Bitcoin with a Square terminal. The ones that have a forward-facing screen have the toggle, I don't know about others.

I will have to remember that! I go every now and then

square does indeed enable Bitcoin payments on their terminals AND they’re listed on BTCmaps. The big ugly problem though is that there seems to be a tremendous amount of variance in how and why.

in fact I only found Dana and blue wind gourmet because of BTCmaps. she had no idea she was on there though. square listed her when she clumsily opted in to Bitcoin payments with her POS account. I have found both types of terminals where the toggle exists for the user to select themselves and those where bitcoin payments are enabled but they need to be asked for. in that case the sales clerk needs to tally up your items, click cash out, then click bitcoin as one of the listed options.

there are many many many places on BTCmaps that square has listed themselves. I haven’t found a single merchant from BTCmap that has square listed as their lightning terminal that even knew they were on there.

I’ve spent some time clicking around the map looking for such business and calling them to ask if they accept bitcoin. Most say no. Most have no clue they’re on there.

Square seems to have different types of terminals and the the older ones don’t have the toggle enabled. Or the small ones you may find a good truck.

Sadly someone I know who uses Square seems to choose to disable Bitcoin. I don't know if I should try to convince them otherwise, it might cause drama D:
