I thought I knew a lot about Okinawa’s intricacies and idiosyncrasies, but when I tackled a Compre Cloze passage on karate, I was surprised to learn that it had originated from Okinawa. Probably I have learnt this beforehand, but it somehow didn’t stick in my mind. I think the calm, dignified image of karate just doesn’t gel with the loud, boisterous and rowdy image I have of Okinawans. I can’t quite imagine them settling down and getting into slow-mo stances.

Anyway because I did the passage with my son, I later broached the topic of learning martial arts with him. It would be good if he can learn some self-defence, I reckon. He wasn’t keen — he is a cautious being like this — but I am hopeful that I have planted the seed in his mind. Maybe karate will temper his lively and boisterous spirit.
