Bedrock Robotics just raised 781B Sats ($600M) in a new funding round that values the company at 5.34T Sats ($4.1B). The company was founded in 2024 and has already raised close to 1.3T Sats (nearly $1B) in total.
Bedrock builds a self driving kit that can be retrofitted onto the construction vehicles already sitting on job sites today. Their autonomous excavators are done with testing and are now doing real commercial work at a water treatment facility in Nevada, an earthwork site in Texas, and a 1.2 million cubic yard civil sitework project with Zachry Construction.
The team is stacked with former Waymo people. CEO Boris Sofman ran the Waymo self driving trucks program before it shut down, and two other cofounders came from Waymo as well. They are now hiring leadership out of Amazon and Uber too.
The timing makes sense. It takes five years or more to master running an excavator, and the Associated Builders and Contractors estimate that more than 40% of construction workers will retire in the next five years.
Here is my take. If AI is going to really bring productivity gains, outfits like this need machines that can work around the clock. A human operator goes home at the end of the shift. An autonomous excavator does not.
Bedrock is blowing past unicorn status at a 5.34T Sats ($4.1B) valuation, but the company is privately owned, so we cannot see if any of this is profitable yet.
What makes this one worth watching is the retrofit angle. If this tech can be applied to the existing construction vehicles already out in the field, the TAM for this can be quite big.
Something I will keep an eye on if they ever go public.
