I definitely agree that nobody used that correctly. a "whitehat" would be taking [only an agreed share] with permission after either disclosing the vulnerability privately, or even getting contracted for pentesting.

They cannot steal hundreds of bitcoin and call themselves a whitehat.
It is like if a hoodlum broke into your house and found your vault, they steal some of your money and say they are "the good guys" because they did not take all of it.
Blockstream is amazing for coming up with the funds to restore Liquid Network.

however, companies that do not allocate reasonable bounties, or at least fund community researchers up-front so they are not forced by starvation to commit morally questionable acts, should not pretend to care more than the market has measured.

Is it starvation or greed? They took 400 BTC. They could have kept 1 BTC then this would make more sense but what they did was more on the greed side.
