Something interesting is happening in advertising. While companies race to replace creative work with generative AI, luxury brands are increasingly emphasizing something machines can't claim, human craftsmanship.

Prada's new 2026 holiday campaign is a perfect example. Instead of generating animated scenes with AI, Prada hired veteran Disney animator John Pomeroy, whose credits include Pocahontas and The Land Before Time, to lead a team creating traditional hand-drawn animation. The campaign features Sadie Sink and Maya Hawke interacting with illustrated animals and winter landscapes. And Prada isn't hiding the production process. It's making the craftsmanship part of the appeal.

Here's where the economics get interesting. Research published in Harvard Business Review, based on a study of 3,000 consumers, found that AI-generated advertisements scored:

  • 14% lower on predicted short-term sales effectiveness.
  • 17% lower on predicted long-term brand equity.

Participants often couldn't distinguish AI-generated ads from human-made ones. So the difference wasn't simply whether people recognized AI. The human-created ads were generally more effective at connecting with audiences.

Of course, AI still offers enormous advantages in cost, speed, and scalability. For routine marketing, those advantages may outweigh any creative shortcomings. But luxury brands operate on a different principle. Scarcity creates value. When everyone can generate polished images, videos, and advertisements almost instantly, the expensive, time-consuming human process itself becomes a selling point.

It's the same reason people pay premiums for handmade watches, original paintings, and bespoke furniture. The irony is that AI could make human creativity more economically valuable in certain markets, even as it makes ordinary content production dramatically cheaper.

Are we heading toward a future where AI-generated content becomes the mass-market standard, while human-made content becomes a premium luxury product?

People with good taste and intelligence will always be able to see the difference between true art and AI. Everyday I put more emphasis and curiosity on that what AI can't automate.

The future luxury/scarcity is human authenticity
