Bluebeam surveyed 750 US architecture, engineering and construction decision makers for its AEC Technology Outlook Report 2027. The headline is simple: construction is still barely using AI.
Only 28% of firms have moved AI into operational use. Just 7% have embedded it across core workflows. Another 32% are still piloting it in limited or experimental applications.
The payoff is real for the firms that did move. `40% of those running AI in production report cost savings over $500,000, over 6.62 BTC at today's rate. 64% report greater cost predictability and 58% say they spot risks and issues earlier in a project.
The gap is what happens next. AI helps firms see problems sooner, but it is less effective at helping prevent them. Reduced rework sits at the bottom of the benefits list, cited by only 17%.
What is holding it back: half of firms, both piloting and scaled, name high implementation costs as the biggest barrier. Lack of internal AI skills is next at 34%. Security and compliance concerns sit at 18%, difficulty fitting AI into day to day project workflows at 15%. Only 2% cite lack of trust in AI outputs.
Bluebeam puts it this way: "The industry has bought the ability to see problems sooner. It hasn't built the path from seeing to stopping, through connecting disconnected systems, cleaning up data, and training people to trust the output."
It will take a long time for AI to penetrate the construction business
The reality is that AI is here to revolutionize all production processes. The faster we understand this concept, the better for everyone. We also need to monitor what it does (trust, but verify). This survey is interesting; the numbers speak for themselves!
