What you've clearly forgotten is that they changed the definition of "recession", the last time we entered one.
But, yeah, usually they end up retroactively declaring earlier start dates for recessions.
Of course they did. I remember years ago reading an article about math testing in schools and how poorly students were doing compared to expected standards and the proposed solution wasn't more time allocated to math, more resources or better teaching techniques, it was to change the way tests were graded so it doesn't look so bad.
I thought it was the most ludicrous thing I had ever heard at the time but now this strategy has become the norm and people don't bat an eye.
