I am not sure if you gain what you think you gain when doing "publicity stunts" like this.

The worst would be to buy iPhones only to destroy them (not sure if anyone did that). Apple doesn't care what you do with your iPhone after you bought it.

It's actually nice that you destroyed it so there is one less iPhone in the world that someone could use instead of buying another one from Apple again.
