It is said we are living in the Age of Information. But turns out, we are actually living in the Age of Misinformation.
With the rise of AI which can produce fake news (including fake images) at rates never seen before, existing problems regarding misinformation (which even leads to other problems like censorship by using the fight against misinformation as an excuse) will become even worse.
Or will they?
What if AI will produce so much fake news which can easily be verified to be fake by doing at least a tiny bit of due diligence, will people start to become skeptical towards any information they find on the internet?
Can we fight "fake news" with even more "fake news"?
More "News so fake you believe it's true" like https://www.thebitcoinbugle.com/?
I certainly hope so but I am not sure.
I have spent many hours worrying about this problem. I think that sooner or later, people will become frustrated and disconnect. At some point legacy media will swoop in because they have the resources to verify disinformation. They have a long way before they rebuild the trust they lost in recent years, but the incentive is there and I believe they will make the most of the opportunity.
