This post is mostly meant as a "thinking out loud" demonstration of how one could purchase a bitcoin miner while maintaining privacy, or at least as most privacy as possible.
For starters, mining has always interested me, though I've never had the time to really dig into it. Nowadays, it's pretty much common knowledge that mining at home is really just for enthusiasts, and should not be considered to be a money-making venture. In all likelihood, it's actually a money-losing venture.
However, many people do advocate for home mining as a good way to get KYC-free bitcoin. I think that's a reasonable justification to explore my options.
Given that I live in a residential community and don't have access to a commercial location, buying a miner like an Antminer is not super reasonable, given the noise. So, I have found the Apollo BTC from FutureBit as a potential alternative. I won't "run the numbers" here, I know it would take a long time, if ever, for it to become profitable, given the quoted hashing rate, initial cost, power costs, etc. I am not posting this to discuss the economic feasibility of this miner.
I am, however, posting this to discuss the feasibility of acquiring this miner in a private way. The way I see it, these are the steps I'd need to take:
  1. Use a fake name when purchasing the miner, so my actual name isn't in the company's records - in case they ever get hacked.
  2. The miner can be purchased with bitcoin (for a discount, which is nice). Getting some bitcoin that can't be traced back to me or my addresses would be required. I haven't dabbled in KYC-free bitcoin yet, so I'd need to explore some options here. I could buy it at an ATM, but that might require several trips to avoid KYC thresholds, plus there's the surcharge of using an ATM. I could also explore CoinJoin, something I've yet to try. That seems like a viable solution.
  3. Once I have the KYC-free bitcoin to make the purchase, I need to have the miner shipped to me. Obviously, giving the company my actual address would defeat the goal of privacy. So how do I do this? My first thought is to get a PO Box at a local post office, and have the miner shipped there. This is not bullet-proof, since PO Boxes require KYC at the post office, but at least my real address wouldn't be in the company's records. Realistically, I can't think of any other alternatives.
This is what I've come up with so far. Have others gone through a similar mental exercise? Anyone put it into action? Anyone come up with alternatives? I would love to hear your input.
Thanks for reading!
You can have the package shipped to any post office, under your name (or whatever name you’re using that day) you just write “General Delivery” , and then the address of the post office below that . They hold it for a certain period of time and then you just go in and pick it up.
You could have it shipped it to a post office located far away from where you live. I don’t know what they require in terms of ID verification at pick up. If we can get past this step, all we’d have to worry about is what level of clandestine data collection and tracking is being done on you by the security camera setup at any given post office.
… I’ve never tried this, only read about it (been meaning to try this out with a random package sometime and see how intrusive it would be) … I’d love to hear more about the process it if anyone here has done it before

This is possible however if you're ordering a miner from Bitmain the packaging makes no attempt to hide what is in the box. The reason for this though is because people want to know they are getting authentic Bitmain ASIC units that have been shipped and not been opened. They have serial numbers and the works.
I had a few shipped to me and asked the buyer if they wanted me to open the box to verify everything shipped in one piece because you could hear some stuff rattling around. I assume just the power cable and manuals but you never know. The buyer was crystal clear that it was important the package remained as shipped.
Anyways if the American government isn't tracking you when you go through all this effort to be anonymous, the Chinese one is. Just have to find a reasonable line you are comfortable with.

Good point, didn’t think of that. If it’s the FutureBit Apollo you want and you live in the US, I bet you could call them and ask for pick up in person. I believe they’re manufactured in California and corporate HQ is in Brooklyn NY, possibly have some inventory on site there too? If you’re going through all that trouble you could also make a vacation out of it

That is a good option, if geographically convenient. Might be worth trying, thanks for the suggestion!

As a follow up, I contacted FutureBit and they only ship from their California factory and do not offer in person pickup or purchasing.

I haven't confirmed this, but I would suspect that you'd need to provide proof of identity to pick up the package from the post office. So unless you have some proof of identity that matches up with the identity you use to place the order, this probably is not an option.

Thanks, I've been meaning to check out robosats. Doing that now!
I could check out craigslist. A quick search shows nothing in my area, but it's certainly a good alternative. I just find craigslist to be a bit sketchy at times ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Today it's easier in the ~AGORA territory, it's like Craigslist but pay you Bitcoin 😉

May be a long shot but see if you can find a mining operation in your region. I happen to live near the headquarters of a large mining company (who shall remain nameless) and they often list used equipment for sale on their website which I can then pick up in person.
Also, there are boxes you can buy (or build) to help reduce noise. Shush Miner is one.
