Imagine paying a thousand dollars up-front and then hundreds of dollars per year after that for the privilege of being surveilled.

The problem is not even the law, it's the fact they are able to do it! You can assume they've been doing for a long time and for very nasty purposes, only now it's sanctioned by law.
