The routing game always seemed like a race to the bottom. I like to open channels to smaller nodes to help decentralize the network. I make them large enough to be useful for a good while, then set the fees high enough that if I deplete the channel I can afford to just open a new one.
Not a great way to route a lot of payments, but I do route a handful, my node stays well connected, and I don't have to worry about the profitability of routing. I rebalance rarely, preferring to open a new channel instead, but sometimes it makes sense. When I try this, I limit the cost to the channel fee I charge. If there's not a route available at that feerate, no worries, there's the new channel option available.
