Second vote for Italy. Milan, Lake Garda and Venice are all worth a visit. Pisa and Florence for a sightsee. Much friendlier than other Mediterranean countries.

Try and learn a little Italian before you go. Some of the regional towns can be a little intimidating otherwise (background of language in Spanish, Portuguese or French can really help).
