Mutiny Wallet offers the ability to subscribe to Mutiny+
Once subscribed, a fee of 21,000 sats gets deducted from your wallet each month, just like a Netflix subscription using a CC.
Some key differences:
  1. The subscription is paid using sats not fiat
  2. Mutiny prompts you whether you want to approve the transaction each month. So no more surprise subscription payments that you forgot to cancel
It's implemented using Nostr Wallet Connect which I think means that Mutiny's nostr relay is acting as a subscription manager of sorts (remembers who to bill when). More details on NWC here #172405
This is the first time I've experienced a self-custodial software subscription using Bitcoin. Feels like a big deal.
This is great! BOLT 12 used to implement recurring payments as a lightning native feature. You could manage your subscriptions from the Core-Lightning CLI and drop one at any time. That feature was trimmed from the draft spec however (to be fair, BOLT 12 already has a lot going on) - I hope it makes it back in at some point as it could shake up a lot of business models and would be a real win for the consumer. It's nice to see Mutiny has a workaround to reenable this!

Nice. Finally my goofy designs for bitcoin subscriptions from 3 years ago become relevant. Same general idea that the wallet prompts you in time, but with BIP 47 payment codes. This makes a lot more sense with lightning and Nostr now.

Oooh, that's a cool use of NWC. What does Mutiny+ give you?

They're still figuring it out, so it was just a donation from me for now.
