NFL is just around the corner. I think rookies reported to camp yesterday. Baseball trade deadline coming up in less than 2 weeks so I think we will have some exciting topics to discuss in the near future but for today, since we covered movies and songs recently it is only natural to discuss sports video games. So:
Shill me the best classic sports game ever (80's, 90's, early 2000's) or best modern sports game ever (past 10-15 years) or both.
Also, in the replies let us know if you still play sports games. I don't play video games much (occasionally old super nintendo games with my 13yr old) but I do play a couple sports games- MLB the show and Madden (I have nba 2k, NHL 2k and Fifa games but I don't really play them).
Sats incoming for those that partake.
Cheers, GR
Daley Thompson's Decathlon (very similar to the earlier game of Track-and-Field)
Daley Thompson was a very successful and hugely popular sports figure obtaining gold medals for Great Britain in the decathlon at the 1980 and 1984 Olympic Games.
Not sure if it was available outside of Europe but was a lot of fun… despite being very frustrating as you went back to the first event after 3 attempts.
Don’t really play modern games although my kids tried to get me to play WWE 2K22 (I think). I’m an old school button masher and you actually have to think about what you are doing these days.

I am unfamiliar with that game. WWE games are always fun and good for button mashers but I am sure you took a beating from the kiddos.
reply
Some of the team games they play are very unforgiving of my old school technique…. but they beat me at everything these days anyway. Except Mario Kart.

Who do you use in mario cart. I am a Koopa Troopa guy?
reply
Tanooki! My favourite quote when a blue shell appears ‘and the first shall be last’….
reply
Guess I am old school. I have only played the original mario kart game.

On the original it was Yoshi. Now I’m wondering how many versions we have here … 3 or 4 I think

It's been a while since I've played any sports games, but I loved the early 00's/late 90's NBA Live (now 2k) and Madden. I found that I actually liked the team building parts more than the actual gameplay, although that was also great.
Not technically a video game, but there's a very fun basketball GM browser game. They also have several other sports, but I haven't really tried them. It's pretty addictive starting with a franchise back in some historical period and managing it over the seasons.

Adding the roster management, season, franchise and career functions to sports games made them so much more enjoyable and of course time consuming.

Loved Blades of Steel and Base Wars as a kid, I remember renting them, I feel old... Spent a lot of time playing Madden in the early 00s. Don't do much anymore though.

Blades of Steel was awesome. I don't recall Base Wars but I played a lot of Super Bases Loaded for SNES. The early Madden, NHL and FIFA games were awesome too.
