Not there yet. Actually I think there's a long way to go. It is getting better

IMO it moved to early last year.

For someone to get dev / technical info about integrating Lightning who doesn’t already know much about Bitcoin, where do they even start?
reply
If you are technical you can understand the concepts of invoices and integrating lightning into an application fairly easily through calling endpoints on a lightning node. This course looks pretty good for that type of thing: https://www.udemy.com/course/pleblabaustin/. If you really want to understand lightning actually works, I would first suggest trying to get a solid understanding of how bitcoin works with Andreas' book: https://github.com/bitcoinbook/bitcoinbook. Just note that the ecosystem is huge and there is a lot of stuff to learn but any progress is worth it.

Imho it has failed

the fact that you can make your own server and your own entry into Lightning, and connect it to your browser to use means that it's far more mature than people give it credit for. Just like the 90's internet, the issue is finding it.

I don't think Lightning is the end of L2. It will be super interesting to see what other forms emerge, but I think real use cases for how people want to use btc in practice -- other than just hodling -- are necessary for it to emerge.
That's one reason I'm so excited about SN: a practical use of btc / lightning to serve a real need. Changes what is possible w/ online communities. Who knows what will emerge when other tangible needs begin to be addressed?

Yep definitely early. I haven't used it too much beyond what Cash App and Exodus offered, paying for a few gift cards on Bitrefill.
After taking a peek at Electrum and being exposed to the idea of nodes and channels, I'm thinking that we still got a ways to go for your average Joes to start using Lightning on a regular basis.

Still "Early"
