We have all bought into using free and open source software for our money...but we still use gmail or zoom or dropbox or mailchimp or slack. What's up with that? Is it actually tough to run software well over time? to keep the data backed up? to keep the software up-to-date? to ward off the threats on the internet?
Federated Computer's FOSS-as-a-service provides Nextcloud, Jitsi, Element/Matrix, Baserow, Vaultwarden, Gitea, Wordpress, Castopod, Wireguard, Listmonk, email server, spam protection, backup/restore, 100% private, protected. All this for $39/month per domain.
If you have stacked 50,000 sats on Stacker News, we'll give you free service. No cost.
answer: convenience and laziness :)

Ads get the number one spot and there's no clear indication besides the username? I think you can make it more obvious. Perhaps consider an alternative icon and no upvotes. Otherwise it's a bit disingenuous. Hacker news does this well enough.

I agree. Nice suggestions. This is just a pilot.
Also great job on WBD. Peter seemed to really like you.

Appreciate that!

What about pining it in first posts ?
reply
We could but pinning doesn't have an API yet. It requires a "manual" database insert.
Our ultimate goal is to allow anyone to create an ad and boost is the closest expression of that that we currently have. While the current format is not ideal, we stand to learn the most from doing it this way.

It's an interesting concept. On one hand it's no different than a boost, so let people do that on their own, no official ad account. On the other hand, you'll probably have ad blockers eventually if you diviate too much.

My preference is to just make it a user setting. You should be free to disable ads and only get a share of the rewards imparted by ads if you interact with them.

alternative icon is a good idea.
i second that, had no idea it was an ad

Second what Tony said here.

Fiat software...?! Such term doesn't exist. Software is software! 😁 However, there is fiat software used by Italians in developing their Fiat cars! 🙈

This you?

Stealing this lol

"Fiat Software" is something you made up.
You can't prove that you're running the unaltered FOSS code you claim to be running. You also can't prove that its a private/secure service and that you're not selling/storing/sharing user data.
I suppose there's a niche for this but as self hosting continues to get easier, your business model makes less and less sense.
Fundamentally, its the same trust model as Gmail, etc. Only you have to pay for it.

Same ad ?

I think we have different copy to run next week.

I actually don't like it, maybe because I haven't found any other alternatives.
