Not exactly true (re: impossible to be faster) in practice. If we didn’t need to route, perhaps. If we have a direct channel already open that has the right balance, certainly, but this isn’t common in practice.

One example Pierre referred to was a trader with a direct connection to Kraken's Lightning node, or any instance where a payment is directly moving from one peer to another.
Is it fair to say that the # of nodes on a blockchain would have to be smaller than the # of hops on a routed Lightning tx to be faster? Assuming all nodes were located in the same data center in both cases?

Yeah, this clip was about other blockchains.
Is there any non-blockchain payment method that could rival the speed of a direct (non-routed) Lightning payment?

Hypothetically, if you create a protocol that doesn’t require you to create channels with counter parties, that’d be faster. But it doesn’t exist and might not be possible.
