Modern smartphones (and smartwatches) are “smart” enough to know when their human subjects are most suggestible and vulnerable. At that exact point, they can start emitting subliminal signals. Think of it as an evolution of Google ads but instead of showing up on your touchscreen they are broadcast inside your mind.
Some call it dream hacking.

Have you been keeping up to date with military funded research? You know the US navy made Tor, right?
One person invents a viable monetary system and everyone loses their mind. But no problem to build a tank with a radar emitter that causes a sensation like your skin is on fire, no problem. Or to force people to accept untested medical procedures to treat a disease that is less lethal than riding a bicycle.
