I'm wondering what software to pick to run some solo-mining educational experiments (*)? I don't want to connect to a pool. I have a PC with some a low end GPU and would like to run some mining software. I found CGMiner, BFGMiner, and EasyMiner. What's best for linux nowadays?
(*) Yes, I know, buying a lottery ticket makes more sense.
Best thing you can do is run cgminer and connect to CKPoolSolo. But that assumes you have an ASIC miner. I just read you have a GPU... sigh...
A GPU doesn't really work for mining real Bitcoin. You will simply waste your time and electricity.
It's like trying to mine for gold with a plastic spoon. Even with an ASIC you are basically playing a lottery. A GPU is just a waste of time, really.
If you just want to do this as a learning experience, you can mine at testnet with your GPU. These coins don't have any value, and they might disappear at any time.
I wrote a couple of guides about this on Bitcointalk:

An S9's will run you about 150, you can plug it into a normal wall socket
I'm messing with CKPoolSolo, pretty easy setup, crazy to think about alternating between solo and pool mining with space heaters.
Kaboomracks is nice

Where do you recommend getting one?

Update: Running a S9 wit 13TH/s as a replacement for a 1000W heating radiator in the house. To do is building a box with a silencer ... Any tips/construction plans out there?
