Whether you’re with friends, coworkers, or family members, keeping up a lively discussion will make your time together much more fun. Keeping a few conversation topics in your back pocket is a great way to introduce new ideas and get the group talking. Try pulling these out at the next dinner party or get-together to keep things interesting and learn more about each other.

Depends on the group. I would like to lead with "hey everyone, what's your strategies for dealing with ever increasing oppressive tyrannical governments and what are you doing to survive the impending financial collapse?" However there's only a few groups I can say that to without the zombie stare.
If they have a family then ask them about their kids and you're all set for a while

‘Would you rather…’ is always a favourite although I like ‘how do you eat a sandwich without thumbs?’ Or ‘who would win in a fight between a shark or a tiger?’
