the reason service providers offer free facebook access, is because they're paid to do so by facebook. the point is to create a de facto walled garden, where facebook, in practice, becomes "the internet" for that region.

so you're basically asking me to imagine a reality where a for-profit company works against their own best financial interests, for the benefit of society as a whole.

which is i guess a long way of saying, it'd be awesome, but i'm not holding my breath.
