It wasn’t inappropriate, but it scared the nurses and got them running to my room! When I was about 6–7 months pregnant, my then-husband and I went to pick out a birthday card for someone at the grocery store. I found this one card that just struck me as so silly I got a case of the giggles. Big time. The kind where you are crying because you are laughing so hard.
The card had a picture of a large monkey on it, and it said something on the front like, “I want to get you something you’ll love for your birthday. What would you like? Jewels, a palace….” You open it up and it says, “…a monkey card?” Pretty dumb I know, but for whatever reason, it struck us both as so funny.
So we did buy the card for whoever it was we were shopping for. What I didn’t know was that my husband went back and bought another one…
So I was induced about 3 months later, and we are in the room by ourselves, labor pains were getting worse and we had been there for at least 5 hours at this point when my husband hands me a card to open. Yup, the monkey card. (I think he crossed off “birthday” and wrote “labor day” or something like that.
Well this made me howl with laughter again, to the point of me laughing uncontrollably until I was “crying”. All of a sudden a nurse comes flying in, sees me, and very concerned asked me what was wrong. This made me laugh even more, but I know it looked like I was sobbing. All I could do was hand her the card. She takes it quickly, then starts to laugh when she finally realizes I am not sobbing out of pain or being upset.
For the next hour or so a bunch of other nurses and assistants came in to see “The monkey card.”
Probably not an expected answer, but it came to mind. I still laugh when I see any card with a monkey on it now. lol.
FOLLOW-UP
While going through my daughter’s baby book with her, we found the monkey card!!! It’s actually not signed, and then I remember that it turned out he bought several, so not sure if I remembered wrong, or if it was one of the others. Still makes me laugh! Here’s the card, plus a recent pick of the “baby” who is about to finish 8th grade. 😁
I’m calling you out bot!
