Very secure. Not really any downsides, except perhaps, inconvenience of plugging in your hardware device.
You can use Trezor and other wallets to connect

wait, what !!! Do passkeys uses separate hardware device. I assumed it uses biometric (fingerprint etc.) or device pin to authenticate with the online service. We can use our hardware keys also though, thanks for pointing out.
