Nice!!! A reusable opendime! Even the satscard can only be reused 10 times.
Are there any tradeoffs with the OrangePill allowing seemingly unlimited reuses? Or is CoinKite just trying to engineer repeat customers by artificially limiting the lifespan of their products?

One obvious tradeoff is how delicate your funds will be on this thing among noobs... If all you have to do is push a little button at the end and shake this thing to make it throw away it's xpub/privkeys and generate new ones, then crap, this thing is going to lose so many noobies' funds it isn't funny.
Obviously it has to be powered on to do that so just walking around with it in your pocket isn't a concern, but once they plug it in and don't know what they're doing it's quite scary.

Interesting. This reminds me a lot of the Coinkite company's stuff, they're the guys who make the legendary ColdCard hardware wallet and a ton of other super awesome Bitcoin stuff, I love them.
They have these things called Opendimes which are basically the exact same thing as these, more or less. I used to hand out these opendimes all the time to people years ago.
They've since been replaced by the even-cooler "SATSCARD" which you are NFC cards that you can re-use up to 10 times, it's basically a cash version of Bitcoin that you can hand along to people. Check out the satscard here, they have a boatload of cool stuff on their store, definitely one of my favorite bitcoin-related manufacturers out there who make all kinds of stuff. I love that you can get the Opendimes complete with a crazy power supply thing that uses a 9V battery so you can be sure there's no way anyone has fucked with any of your hardware or power supplies etc. You can operate fully off the grid with these guys.

Idea is cool, but the key point will be form factor and cost of production. The way you enclose the thing in a nice/fun package matters a lot (circuit boards look scary to many people). If you manage to increase production, could be a huge hit in marketing (giving a pill to every participant at an event, loyalty programs, etc.)

Agree. This is a great idea

I do dig this bolt.fun website though, I will have to check this out further later today. Might be the ideal place to find those who might be interested in collaborating with me on my envisioned lightning network powered website that would probably integrate nostr to some extent, but a customized version of it.

It looks cool
Anyone know how this is different then the Opendime?
reply
Reusable (Opendime is one-time use).

Opendime doesn't have an accelerometer onboard, so no way to generate new keys on the fly. Of course, this is a double-edged sword. Noobs are going to write over their private keys with this thing easily, possibly losing funds forever.

Pretty cool.

Is there a reason this couldn't be used for instant settlement of transactions without Lightning? If you amortize the cost across many transactions, the USB costs basically nothing. Could be used for anything from buying food to buying a car.
Moreover, when you hand someone one of these, it is more obvious that you are simply handing over information, not money, so it is absurd that there is anything that could be taxed.
