I just finished calming down an altercation between a Jewish patient and a Lebanese patient who are sharing a room together. The topic was about the recent events in Gaza. As I was trying to de-escalate the situation with security, I was asked by the Jewish patient about where I, as their doctor, stood on the current events. The lebanese patient stood back for a moment to also make sure I had answered something. I refrained from answering as it could affect their care but this led to the Jewish patient becoming physically violent against me and condemning me for not saying anything related to condemning the attacks. Needless to say, he was taken away by security and left AMA.
What should I have done in this scenario? Where should doctors side in this current happening?
Long live Palestine.
