I've replaced a wall mounted 1500w space heater with an S9. It will take a while for the BTC reward to pay off the upfront cost, but I'm super happy with the results so far, three weeks in.
To heat a good sized bathroom with cold tile floors, I run it at 600 watts, fan speed 40%. It's quiet, quieter than the really nice but in wall mounted heater. This has been producing a consistent 7-7.5 TH/s.
Obviously no massive BTC reward comes out of that, but if you're going to use electric heat to keep some rooms warm anyway, I highly recommend doing this.
Maybe it takes a few years to pay off the cost, as we only run it 6-7 months of the year and not always 24/7. But, I really enjoyed learning more about how mining rigs connect to pools etc. There's also something very satisfying about contributing a tiny bit to the Bitcoin network hash rate.
Highly recommend.
I used BTC sessions YouTube walkthrough, and the crypto cloaks PDF outline. I did not buy the crypto cloaks fan attachments and shell though. Instead I used some pieces of plywood. I'm a cheap-ass and wanted to keep my upfront costs as low as possible just in case this didn't work out like I thought. Plus I like wood work and will be making my own case this winter.
Stay warm!

Great post and totally agree, this is where home mining is a no-brainier: use it as an electric heater! Next stop is to throw in some PV panels for a truly future-friendly decentralised vision of Bitcoin

That'd be pretty cool. Though, I live in Canada and I doubt I could get enough solar energy in winter to make this worthwhile. There is potential for micro hydro, but running the $$$ numbers/watt, and the potential sound disturbance kills that idea for me.

600 watt has been the most efficient clocking in my experience. Hell ya to the s9 heater ! 🤙

I was looking into doing something similar but the ROI didn't look very good to me but I also don't need a heater right now.
Did you happen to look into using an s19 instead of an s9? You can replace the fan on an s19 with an industrial exhuast fan like this: https://a.co/d/9RjamUk so it isn't crazy loud.

For sure, is important to have the ability to replace an existing heat source and actually need to use the heat. I am currently playing with the idea of replacing two more 2000w base-board heaters with a single S19 and that fan. I want to, but have not pulled the trigger yet.

Good points. I'd love to hear more about your adventures with the s19!

I have thought about running a miner on reduced power but was concerned I would not reach minimal payout amount.
Where you able to find a pool that had a small payout threshold where you could withdraw Sats?
reply
Braiins pool is probably your best bet. But they still take 10% if you withdraw less than 0.001btc (if I'm remembering right). I earn on avg 0.000008 BTC per day. It will take a while before I get to a no fee withdraw level... I'm fine with that. Maybe if this new pool, Ocean, implements lightning withdrawal it'll be the place for small miners to go.

I'm gonna do this soon. Will probably just solo mine, lol

Where did you get S9?
reply
AV digital solutions on Amazon. No issues. Miner was in good condition. Wasn't even dusty inside. To make it quiet you need to upgrade the fans and use BrainsOS+ to control the settings. That BTC sessions walkthrough is incredibly detailed.
reply
How is it quiet? Did you put it inside a box in the enclosure?
reply
Mainly just by installing quiet fans and lowering the fan speed. If you use BrainsOS+ you can play with the parameters. Nothing is fully contained in a box yet, so it could get even quieter once I do. Photo of current set up here:

I'm still looking around for old S9's
I'd love to play around with one for this kind of stuff. Maybe even solo mine & hope for the best

I got this off Amazon....AV Digital solutions. No complaints. But yeah, maybe you find a cheaper one somewhere.
