Is there any way stacker news can monitor or combine all the posts regarding a big news headline? For instance, I've seen at least ten different people post the same news information regarding the guilty verdict of Bankman-Fried since the news broke around 8pm EST. This seems super unnecessary and it just congests the news feed.
Thanks!
You're making a specific request, but it reminds me that I was talking about an idea with @k00b recently that's relevant here.
What if SN had some form of peak pricing for posts?
I floated the idea of having the cost of posting equal the number of posts in the past hour, as an easy first step. I doubt most of those repetitive posters would keep posting if it cost them more.

Nice idea.
Would require more substantial verification of post content than presently exists though. I believe currently the validation is done only on the url itself.
Continuing in that direction doesn’t prevent different types of links: e.g. Twitter, vs landing page, vs press release va GitHub. Or more importantly the same news from different sources from appearing multiple times.
But I agree with the sentiment in general. Rather than needing to mute serial offenders.

We alert people that there are similar story titles already when they’re creating items. It’s only a gentle nudge but I just wanted to mention that. We could be more aggressive about it in a variety of ways.
I think @Undisciplined has the right idea. Global rate limiting/fee escalation would probably go some distance

What is the sn etiquette with regards to rewarding posts that are just copy pasting a news article link?
I appreciate there is a certain amount value by having one's attention drawn to a topic, but the root author would be the natural recipient of most of the zaps.

SN is still very young and many users, like me, haven't been here very long. That makes it difficult to have firmly established etiquette, but I've noticed a move away from just posting links amongst regular visitors. When they want to share a link, they make a discussion post and provide a few thoughts about the linked content.

It is not so hard to look for the dupes and similar notifications. It took me a minute to recognize them when I was brand noob. I think the market disincentivizes the repeats over time, yes?
reply
But that has been put in place, just that some people still post those news knowing it's duplicate news.
