People tend to centralize on what they believe. Kind of part of the human condition. We tend to look for some type of higher power.
Bitcoin itself holds a brilliant set of simplicity, which allows gathering in acknowledgement. Mixed with its capacity to potentially change the world, an old system reluctant to change, and global instability, you get yourself a prime candidate for religious idealogy.
That stated, anything can become a religion with enough time. Some guy becoming a zombie after 3 days ended up changing the world 2000 years ago. From bitcoin simplicity, it's even more believable of what can be achieved. Especially when the creator is unknown like Satoshi Nakamoto has been.
So from my perspective, I think bitcoin is both a technology and a new religion that is slowly growing.
