I though it would be exciting and fun. But I think I'm wasting my time.
Basically there is no community traction. Only a couple of core OG (ICO investors lol) are there to retweet each other. As with all shitcoins, there is a company (a "foundation", lol) keeping it alive for multiple years now, thanks to their ICO. Once a week, a couple of dudes meet (including me) and decide of the overall long term direction of the project, and share updates and insider info. Funnily enough, many projects built on top of the network, or around it, are ran by those same dudes. Transparency is only "something we aim for", not something built in. Most of our block producers are under control, they do what we asked them to without asking. Even most exchanges relies on our block explorer (lol). The end goal for the project is clear, yet after many years it's still to be seen if it will even be useful. They will probably have one last hype/pump moment, before being forgotten like many other shitcoins.
I did not want this, but I still need a paycheck. I want to build around Bitcoin. Ethereum is clearly failing, yet a couple of business oriented dudes think they can do better?
It's hard to find something really focused on Bitcoin (so many shitcoins job offers). I'm still young, maybe I should just move on already, go back to video game or something. At least people are real in there. I'm a software dev by the way.
Thanks for reading my rant. Hope to see you again at 100k.
there are awesome open source projects building on Bitcoin, some even have paid roles thanks to grants

Yeah I'm thinking that at some point I should just get my head out of my ass and start contributing more on my free time.

how’s the pay?

Good for where I live. But it does not matter. I gave up on some gold opportunity before because the work was boring.

I feel your pain. I'm looking for Bitcoin gigs and most of what's available are altcoin/exchanges which is adjacent at least but not really the same thing. Thanks for sharing!

There are many companies working with Bitcoin but it's not their main focus. I did implement Bitgo sevices for one e-wallet provider but that was it. What I'm looking for is a project which build useful things for user with current Bitcoin features, as well as doing research on how to improve Bitcoin as well. Pretty hard to find, let alone join.

I've applied to several Bitcoin only places at this point but tend not to hear back once the resume exchange is done for some reason.

How do you become a developer in the bitcoin/alts space? any ideas to proceeding assuming I have intermediate knowledge of Python/ C++/ JavaScript? I am also familiar with basic cryptography like sha256/elliptic key etc

It really depends what you to want to work on. There are plenty of companies related to crypto looking for software devs, even junior. But 99% of the work in those company are not directly to crypto, let alone Bitcoin.
If you want Bitcoin only jobs opportunities, check here https://bitcoinerjobs.co/.
If you are okay joining shitcoin companies like I did (don't do it if you really care about Bitcoin philosophy) you can check https://pompcryptojobs.com/jobs/. There are plenty of job platform like this, easily accessible with a DuckDuckGo search query.
The important parts in getting a job is to show that you understand all main concepts. There is a massive lack of software developer in general, even more so in the crypto space. Show that you have passion and you should be able to land something. Try to do some open source if you can as well.
