I'd like to get some analytics going for Stacker News so I can reason about usage/features a little more. I don't want to use Google Analytics or anything with a tracker for privacy reasons. Any users have an opinion on this? I'm looking at https://plausible.io/ but open to other privacy minded sytems.

As for privacy, we have even friends working for Google and they do their best so that everything is private. There are Cypherpunks there as well. Plausible is a 3rd party service, the same level as Google. Not a bit better, not a bit worse. They just happen to have a nice "Privacy" marketing…
What are the questions you would like to get answered by using analytics?

Mostly simple stuff about what users are doing on the site. Like how long they stay or what stories they like.

Sure. To answer such questions you definitely need JavaScript client-side analytics. But there may be some open source libraries for that? But surely it may be easier to use a ready-made 3rd party one, just wondering how much it can cost.
It is interesting to think about the responsibility of operating a site like this and doing any 3rd party hooks which reflect on how much needs to be earned in order to keep up running with all the fancy extra services… Just my 1sat :) Thank you for working on and improving stacker.news!

Of course!
I went with plausible. I’m probably going to open source the analytics too - they have a feature to make your analytics public. The goal is everyone knows what I know.
