Not surprising, but still disappointing.
I know WoS gets a lot of flack around these parts, but custodial services will always have a place in the Lightning ecosystem. They are fine for small amounts and the easiest way for newbies to recieve funds without worrying so much about in-bound liquidity.

Doesn't matter how little it is. If you're custodying user funds, especially in the US, without KYC, you're going to either shut down, rug, end up in jail, or be unpopular enough to not get noticed.

It was always going to happen. I assumed they were going to shotgun KYC first or something like that though. I wonder what changed to make this happen. I think technically all custodial wallets aren't allowed unless they are qualified custodians or something.... looks at SN balance in corner

Don't think Stacker News will be next, there are custodial KYC-free sites with LN deposits and withdrawals operating with bigger numbers.

The government is trying to get through bitcoin as it can't attack layer 2. Which is the lightning wallet because since apps are centralized they want a piece of the pie.

removing the app from US app stores will not satisfy regulators - they will expect kyc on all users globally to make sure americans are not using it
yes, that is fucked up but that is how large custodians have been treated in the past
removing the app from US app stores abruptly with delayed comms indicates a level of panic from their team that is a concern - the only responsible path forward requires deliberate action from the wallet of satoshi team to encourage users to withdraw funds ASAP - otherwise the next course of action is likely a panicked shotgun kyc of all users without notice

They might force KYC on you if you try to access it from a US IP with a grace period to withdraw like bitmex / bybit do.
or introduce limits.
Bybit has a $20000 daily limit for un-KYC'd accounts.
