In 1913, O'Reilly's novel was made into a movie entitled Moondyne. Directed by W. J. Lincoln, it starred George Bryant, Godfrey Cass and Roy Redgrave.
Moondyne Joe was often portrayed as a "Robin Hood" figure in popular culture. Despite his criminal activities, some saw him as a folk hero who resisted authority and helped the underprivileged.
