During this trip, I developed a special contempt for people in North America and elsewhere who scold other countries for cleaning up crime while their own cities collapse around them.
Less than a decade ago El Salvador was the murder capital of the world, not even close to any of the cities in USA. Now it's much better in El Salvador, but at the same time there has been a huge lack of due process. I get why the lack of due process, but I still think it's concerning.
Bitcoin has more than paid for itself. Without the country's adoption of Bitcoin, I would not have visited, nor would many others.
I love Bitcoin and I think it's the future 100%, but the amount of people that visited El Salvador because of Bitcoin is probably not very high. Bitcoin is still pretty niche, and normal people aren't going to travel in droves to a LATAM country that used to be the murder capital of the world just because Bitcoin.
Young people here are learning about Bitcoin. In coming years, they will have the knowledge and skills to get good jobs working for companies or start their own tech-related businesses.
This I agree with 100%. Especially with the cost of living being so low; if you live in El Salvador and charge USA rates for tech related skills you will live like a king.
In general I'm very curious to see what happens to El Salvador during the next Bitcoin Bull run, I assume it will make the country much better off than if they didn't accept Bitcoin. However I'm not convinced that it's as safe as people say; if you research the murder rate, it's still a thing as the gangs wrestle with the government.
