He obviously meant both "gold" and "nerds" in a derogatory sense. Maybe in a lighthearted making fun of sense. But it's still surprisingly insightful for somebody from his political affiliation and especially for a boomer. The fact that he is familiar with Bitcoins achieving scarcity shows that he at least understands it.
