Dear Bitcoin journalists and communicators,
Please stop reporting on Bitcoin stats that only go up over time.
"In other news today, the number of non-zero balance bitcoin addresses has reached another new all-time high."
Soooo, you're saying the network isn't dead. Got it.
These non-zero balances could be anything from dust to an exchange wallet with hundreds of thousands of bitcoin. This number only ever goes up, afaict. So, reporting on it is just noise. Please stop wasting our time with stats like this.
(Or am I missing something? Is this actually newsworthy for some reason?)
To provide a counterexample, the number of on-chain "entities" (ala Glassnode) holding a balance of at least 1 BTC (or 0.1 BTC) is more interesting, even though the method of divining "entities" is not exact and it both overcounts and undercounts. At least that number has a non-zero chance of going down in the short term (though I fully expect it to only go up in the long term).
What other Bitcoin stats do you consider to be nuisance/noise?
