Hal Finney, the Cypherpunk who was second to 'run the Bitcoin code', after Satoshi. Perhaps because Finney was an avid runner, upon running the second Bitcoin node - he playfully wrote on Twitter:
In 2013, Hal posted on bitcointalk forum that he had been diagnosed with the debilitating condition ALS mentioning that he could still code, but he could code very slowly - as the condition slowly paralyzes.
Hal's condition steadily worsened, the ongoing paralysis forced him to retire from his coding and, just five years after receiving the first bitcoin transaction from Satoshi, Hal passed away - with his body cryogenically preserved instead of buried.
When Twitter changed ownership, policies were said to change too - including the policy that old, long unused accounts - such as Hal's - would be deleted.
Hearing this, Hal's wife (Fran) chose to log into her husband's long dormant account to ensure that it would be active and would not be deleted.
However, not only did she help preserve Hal's account, but Fran used the account to publicize a 21 km distance event, close to her heart that would raise money for others with her husband's condition.
That run was a success 12 months ago. However, in just a few days, close to the date when Hal first ran the Bitcoin code, a second such 'running' event will take place.
Just as with the first, anyone can take part wherever they are in the world. Participants can run the 21km (15 miles) - but also walk or roll too.
in order to raise both funds and awareness.
If you wish, you can join in and Run Bitcoin too! But be quick, you have less than a week left.
